Yes. After an accident, you have the right to choose who repairs your car. Your insurer can recommend a garage from their approved network, but they cannot force you to use it. If you’d rather your car came to MSL Customs, you’re entitled to insist on it.
Why insurers steer you towards their own network
When you report a claim, most insurers will offer to book your car into one of their approved repairers. That’s convenient for them, and sometimes for you, but it isn’t your only option, and they don’t always make that clear. Their network is a suggestion, not a requirement.
How to tell your insurer you want your own repairer
It’s simpler than people expect:
- When you report the accident, say clearly: “I’d like to use my own repairer.”
- Give them the garage’s name and details.
- If you’d rather not have that conversation, hand the phone to us and we’ll have it for you.
That’s it. You don’t need to justify the choice.
Does choosing my own repairer cost more?
No. Choosing your own repairer doesn’t cost you more, and on a non-fault claim there’s no excess for you to pay anyway. The work is carried out to the same manufacturer specification and backed by a written guarantee either way.
