In short: if you’re hit by an uninsured driver, you can still make a claim and get your car repaired. You either claim through your own comprehensive policy, or through the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB), a scheme funded by insurers specifically for accidents caused by uninsured or untraced (hit-and-run) drivers.
Here’s what to do.
At the scene
The steps are the same as any accident, and the evidence matters even more here:
- Get everything you can. The other car’s registration, make, model and colour, and the driver’s details if they’ll give them.
- Photograph and video the damage, both vehicles and the scene.
- Find witnesses and note their details.
- Report it to the police if the driver has no insurance, gives false details, or drives off. Uninsured driving is an offence, and a police reference can help your claim.

Your two routes to a claim
- Through your own insurer. If you’re comprehensively insured, you can usually claim on your own policy. A genuinely non-fault claim shouldn’t cost you your no-claims, but check whether your excess applies and whether it can be recovered.
- Through the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB). If the other driver is uninsured or can’t be traced, the MIB exists to cover exactly this. It can deal with vehicle damage and injury claims where there’s no insurer to pursue.
Can I still choose my own repairer?
Yes. However the claim is funded, the choice of repairer is still yours. You don’t have to use a garage you’re steered towards.
Let us take the stress out of it
Being hit by someone with no insurance is frustrating, but it doesn’t have to be a headache. We’ll help work out the right route, deal with the claim, and repair your car to manufacturer standard. Tell us what happened or call 0121 766 6669.
This is general guidance. Whether you claim through your own insurer or the MIB depends on your circumstances.
