non-fault

Will a non-fault claim affect my insurance premium?

A driver reviewing car insurance paperwork at home

Short answer: a genuine non-fault claim should not cost you your no-claims bonus, because the costs are recovered from the at-fault driver’s insurer rather than your own policy. You may still see your premium move slightly at renewal, because insurers price on risk and any claim is a data point, but a properly handled non-fault claim keeps that impact to a minimum.

Here’s what’s actually going on.

Why any accident can nudge your premium

When you renew, insurers ask whether you’ve had any accidents or claims, regardless of fault. Statistically, a driver who has been in one accident is slightly more likely to be in another, so some insurers adjust the price. That’s why you might see a small change even when you did nothing wrong.

The key point: this is very different from a fault claim, which draws on your own policy and usually loses you your no-claims discount.

What “non-fault” really protects

On a genuine non-fault claim:

  • Your no-claims bonus is protected, because the claim isn’t paid from your policy.
  • You don’t pay an excess. The at-fault driver’s insurer covers the cost.
  • You keep your right to a courtesy car while yours is repaired.

The one thing to watch is making sure the claim stays firmly non-fault. If liability is recorded as “split” or “unresolved”, you can lose some of that protection, which is why good evidence and proper handling matter.

How to keep it non-fault

  • Gather strong evidence at the scene (photos, witness details, the other driver’s information). See our step-by-step for after a non-fault accident.
  • Report it quickly, so the account of what happened is fresh.
  • Let it be handled properly. A claim that’s chased and evidenced tends to be settled cleanly in your favour.

Where MSL Customs fits in

We manage non-fault claims end to end, dealing with the insurers so the claim is recorded correctly and your car is repaired to manufacturer standard. If you’ve had a knock that wasn’t your fault, report it here or call 0121 766 6669.

This article is general guidance, not financial advice. How a claim affects your specific policy is a matter for your insurer.
